06 May 2009 - Virgin Media pilot 200Mbps broadband over DOCSIS3 technology
Virgin Media have initiated trials of up to 200Mbps broadband via its latest DOCSIS3 technology.
The pilot is limited to just 100 lead adopters in the Ashford area, incidentally where the original 50Mbps pilots took place. The press release boasts the 200Mbps pilot is the fastest deployment of cable broadband in the world, with only fibre to the premises deployments offering faster services.
Virgin will reportedly be using the high speeds to test applications such as 1080p high definition TV and 3DTV for an estimated 6 months.
High specification equipment will be required such as gigabit Ethernet connectivity for end users to see such data speeds. Interestingly queries are being raised as to how many online services will allow users to take full advantage of the product, with many websites connecting at 100Mbps rates to data centres for example.
Times are certainly a changing.
